Restoration of another Mercedes-Benz
Among the most popular of the Pocher Classic kits, the K-82 Mercedes 500 Cabriolet presents a unique combination of challenges, incluidng diabolical wire wheels, daunting independent suspensions, and the potential for a folding top. The model is a replica of a famous one-off custom design that combined the roominess of the cabriolet A body with the distinctive features of the Spezial Roadsters--V'ed windshield, outside exhaust pipes, and unique dashboard. With these features going for it, it is hard to believe that such a model would find its way into the attic, but they do. DMC is proud and delighted to bring yet another Pocher Mercedes into the light of day. This particular model suffered from a collapsed rear suspension and a missing door, but it had signs of careful construction--sewn interior, black paint job, complete details--that cried out for a restoration. The only thing standing between the display shelf and this model was a very stubborn layer of nicotine and dust.
A common problem is that the retaining nut inside the differential falls off. Seemingly a daunting repair, but quite
do-able, without removing the differential from the model.
A quick test of the surface revealed a neatly applied black paint job that responded
well to being cleaned and polished. A gooey coating of nicotine and house dust required several
applications of polishing compound.
Comparison between cowl and cleaned hood panels proved that this job
was worth doing. Removing the windshield simplified this job as well as the job of cleaning the
windshield and its corroded frame.
A little silver paint on the radiator, some polish on the 'chrome' bits, and this model
is nearly ready for a debut.
This door had fallen off and had damage to the paint. Looks pretty good now.
Even the window works.
Final touch is to add a license plate, in this case the year of production.
